Phone Call Etiquette for the Dating Man and Woman

Aug 04, 2010 1 Comment »

Dating is hard enough without this whole telephone thing getting in the way. I mean, this little gadget is supposed to make things easier, but instead it creates one more obstacle to overcome. I’m under the impression that there was a time when you’d meet someone and then go out, as opposed to meet someone, phone them, and hope to go out. Anyway, these are the times we live in, and here’s some advice to help you through them.

Don’t expect a number, or feel obligated to give one

Email and instant messenger applications are big. As are things like Facebook accounts. Now, you really should block everyone but friends from your Facebook, but otherwise keep this point in mind. You do not need to give someone a phone number anymore. If you would rather, it’s perfectly acceptable to give out any of these alternatives. Likewise, you shouldn’t be offended if this is what’s offered to you.

Call within a day or two of getting the number

So you’ve got this person’s number. Now what? Well, here it comes: use it! The singles scene is full of stressed out people waiting for their phone to ring. Trust me, that stress is far worse than rejection. So, if you don’t want the number, say so. If you get the number, use it soon. Besides, if you wait a week they’ll forget who you are.

Prepare for the call

Don’t go writing scripts, though you could if you really wanted to I guess. Preparing just means that you should think about what you are going to say, and give yourself space to say it. Yes, space. Space physically and mentally. Don’t call up this person you want to go on a date with while playing a video game, waiting for a commercial to end or as you cook your stew.

Smile while you talk

They won’t see the smile, but they’ll hear the smile. It also reminds your brain that you’re in a good mood, a good place and will help you like this person either more. Give it a try any time you phone someone.

What are your phone call etiquette rules, and do they differ for different types of people? Share your thoughts by adding a comment below. Just click the link and start a conversation.
