You shouldn’t take first date preparation lightly. While it’s great to have that “take me as I am” attitude, it’s not necessarily practical. Before people can do that, they did a reason to get to know the “as I am” part of you. That’s why you dress a little better, work a little harder, and put more thought into things than you normally do.
Dress the part – If you haven’t read this first date tip before than you likely haven’t read a whole lot. This is far and away the most important thing you can do. Dressing well says so many good things about you. It says you care about yourself, it says you care about them, it says you are aware of the world around you, and it says you have personality.
Have cash and change – Credit cards are great, but they can get awkward on a first date. Here’s why having cash is a great tip: If the date sucks, you can drop a few bills and leave when the moments right. If your date insists on paying half, you don’t have to go through awkward split payments (you don’t want a date to feel like a transaction). As for the change, well, it looks nicer and smoother to be able to pay the bill and the tip without having to ask for change from the waiter first.
Bring a conversation starter – Knowing some good conversation starters is good, but bringing along something to start a conversation with is even better. This could be a piece of jewelry, or it could be a book (that you read on the bus on the way over). These things, when made apparent, open the door to questions, which leads to good conversation.
Have somewhere to be, but not really – While planning the date, it’s nice to drop in a line about having to make it an early night, or having an appointment to get to an hour or so after your date starts. This take the pressure off for both of you. That said, have an out so that you can keep things going should the date be great.
Anyone out there who’s been on more than a few dates in their lifetime surely has a routine they follow before a first date. We’d love to hear what it is, and whether any of the above first date tips are in line with the types of things you do.
