A Little Prayer For Yourself

May 09, 2010 No Comments »

As Kim Lyons said, “Yesterday is a cancelled check; tomorrow is a promissory note; today is the only cash you have, so spend it wisely”. We all know that it is better to let the past go, that dwelling on our experiences or worrying excessively about the future only makes us forget about the beauty of the present moment. However, “living in the now” is easier said than done…

Life is tough, and we cannot erase stress and tension from our lives. However, we can learn how to live with them, to live – not to struggle or overcome. As there is no peace in fighting, and there is no happiness in trying to conquer.

One of the most effective ways to decrease stress is to practice this proper diaphragmatic breathing technique. Whenever you feel angry, or tensed, whenever your worries and problems overwhelm you, take a deep breath. Inhale in a gradual and unhurried way, noticing your abdomen expanding out. When your lungs are full, pause for a moment, and when it feels natural, begin to exhale. Purse your lips, and imagine blowing out a candle. Make your exhalation nice, long, and full, longer than inhalation. This technique will decrease your muscle tension and anxiety, reduce your heart rate and blood pressure, and increase your body awareness. Repeat this routine several times throughout the day, or whenever you feel overly stressed out.

It is important to remember, however, that we can’t only heal through physical means, and stress is an enemy of the body AND mind. According to Buddha, “All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make our world.”, and unfortunately, in our material and deadline driven world, we have forgotten about this essential key to happiness and success.

Every morning we wake up to face the challenges of our usual routine, unpleasant events, or people we do not get along with. Why not generate positive thoughts and encourage ourselves, why not remind ourselves that we are worth of being content, that we are strong and loveable? Look in the mirror, smile, even if you feel sad, greet the wonderful You. Tell yourself how much you respect and cherish the person in the mirror, how much you believe in him/her. “Good morning, you can do everything you decide to do; you are starting your day as a winner! I love you!” Sounds funny? Give it a try; learn to look deep into your own eyes with love and appreciation. Charge yourself with this good energy, and feel the endless strength of your spirit.

Enjoy the calmer and happier You.
