Hi Sheri and Liz
I just joined as a result of someone pointing out I have no social life.
I am a female who grew up in Calgary and Edmonton and has come back to put down roots after living in other provinces and countries.
Sheri, here is my thoughts to your question... AB has a cyclical economy dependant on the oil and gas industry. I have noticed a "eat or be eaten" mentality with friends who have weathered the ups and downs of the industry. These same people are more relaxed when you get them on a beach volleyball court! I wish I could introduce you to some real cowboys; they are very down to earth.
One of the great pleasures of Calgary is celebrating its Cowboy roots.
There is a horseback riding trip in the mountains offered a week before the start of Calgary Stampede. My out of province friends that visit and go horse back riding always comment on the "real" cowboys they met.
I have been to Ranchmans once and it was a blast. Shall we meet at the May 31st event and plan an outing to the original Ranchmans?
