Chile is one of the world’s most spectacular countries: 4,000 km of Pacific Ocean coastline compete with the massive Andes mountains for bragging rights to Chile’s top natural attractions.  On this trip we’ll sample both, with singletrack riding and Pacific surfing, and we’ll throw in 4 days in the spectacular Atacama Desert in Northern Chile, one of the driest and most scenic deserts in the world, with geysers, lagoons, and volcanoes up to 6,000 m high!

Highlights

Spectacular scenery and riding in the driest desert in the world, the Atacama
One of the world's most scenic rides, the EL Dorado trail near San Pedro de Atacama
The charming and beautiful seaside town of Valparaiso, home of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda
Riding at Cerro El Roble, in the shadow of South America's highest peak, Mt. Aconcagua
Surfing and beach time at Viña del Mar
Visits to Atacama area attractions such as El Tatio geysers at 4,300m, laguna de Chaxa, and the Quebrada Del Tigre (Devil's Gorge)

Some extra information:
Valparaíso Situated about 120km (72 miles) northwest of Santiago, Valparaíso is the second biggest city in Chile and the Capital of the Fifth Region. In 2003 Valparaíso was declared a World Heritage Site, due to its historical importance, natural beauty, original architecture and layout.

San Pedro de Atacama
San Pedro de Atacama is 2400 metres (7874ft) above sea level so you might find that you run out of breath a little more quickly than normal. Once you get over 3000 metres (9842ft), it will start to be more noticeable. The locals call it ‘puna’.  It is a pre-Inca town in northern Chile, and a popular tourist destination. Its permanent population as of 2005 was about 1,000.

The Tatio Geyser
Locally known as Los Géiseres del Tatio, is located within the Andes Mountains of northern Chile at 4,200 meters above mean sea level. Contrary to some reports, it is not the highest-elevation geyser field in the world. With over 80 active geysers, El Tatio is the largest geyser field in the southern hemisphere.
Valle de la Luna
Spanish for "Valley of the Moon" is a moon-like landscape located about 13 km west of San Pedro de Atacama, in the Antofagasta Region of Chile. It is part of Los Flamencos National Reserve.

Salar de Atacama
It is the largest salt flat in Chile. It is located 55 km south of San Pedro de Atacama and is surrounded by mountains with no drainage outlets. To the east is enclosed by the main chain of the Andes, while to the west lies a secondary mountain range of the Andes called Cordillera de Domeyko. Large volcanoes dominate the landscape, including the Licancabur, Acamarachi, Aguas Calientes and Láscar. The latter is one of the most active volcanoes in Chile.

Pucará de Quitor
A defensive fortress built by the Atacameños before the Inca control among 900 b.c. and 1200 b.c.

Important:  This day-to-day schedule should be taken only as a general guide. Although we update our itineraries every year, to take into account such things as: changes to biking routes and changes in the routing or availability of local transport, it is not possible to guarantee that any of our holidays will run exactly according to the proposed itinerary.  A variety of factors, including adverse weather conditions and difficulties with transportation, can lead to enforced changes. The trip leader will make any changes that are necessary.

     Trip Details
Trip Difficulty
The mountain biking in Chile is challenging, and not suitable for beginners or weak intermediates.  The trails are rocky, featuring some technical sections where solid bike handling skills are mandatory. Some of the trails have exposure (i.e. there are steep dropoffs on one side of the trail).  Many of the exposed sections are short and can be walked easily, however if you are not comfortable with technical, rocky trails, then this trip is not for you.
